Un pequeño recorte circular extraído de un mapa de Montevideo ofrece un conjunto de nombres de calles y lugares a partir de los que se retratan los personajes y situaciones que dieron nombre a estos espacios urbanos. Las definiciones correspondientes a cada calle fueron extraídas del Nomenclátor de calles de Montevideo, y las ilustraciones en cada ficha fueron inspiradas por fotografías, monumentos, pinturas y documentos históricos de la ciudad.
El proyecto busca reconstituir la materialidad y las historias particulares detrás de los nombres que constituyen la nomenclatura urbana, siempre separada de la experiencia de quienes habitan la ciudad.
A small circular cutout of a map of Montevideo offered me a set of names of streets and places to make a portrait of all of the characters and situations that gave names to those urban spaces. The Montevideo Street Nomenclator provided the definitions corresponding to each street, and the illustrations on each card came after diverse historical sources such as photographs, monuments, and paintings of the city.
The project seeks to reconstitute the materiality and the particular stories behind the names used in the urban nomenclature, always separated from the experience of the city dwellers.
